Taking home second in total medals won, the United States dominated in the 2026 Winter Olympics hosted in Milan Cortina. Team USA came home with 33 total medals: 12 gold, 12 silver, and 9 bronze. 12 gold medals is an impressive record for Team USA, and what’s more, female athletes contributed 8 of those medals.
The Women’s Olympic ice hockey team beat Canada in overtime in the gold medal match with Megan Keller’s goal, gaining their third gold medal and eighth total medal since their start in 1998. This means that they have medaled in every single Olympics they have played in. In contrast, the men’s ice hockey team won their first gold medal since 1980 this year, also defeating Canada in overtime with Jack Hughes’ goal.
Alysa Lui was also a standout athlete at this year’s games. She was one of the top figure skaters in the world until she retired at 16 in 2022 after the Beijing Olympics due to burnout. She came back in 2024, and two years later, in Milan, she won gold in women’s figure skating, as well as helping to secure gold for the team event. Other members of the gold-medal-winning team include Amber Glenn, Ilia Malinin, Ellie Kam, Daniel O’Shea, Madison Chock, and Evan Bates.
Even though it was her first Olympics, Elizabeth Lemley won gold in the women’s moguls. Breezy Johnson added another gold with her performance in women’s alpine downhill, and Mickaela Shiffrin added a third for the women’s alpine slalom. Shiffrin became the first American skier to win three gold medals and is now tied for the most Olympic medals won by an American woman in alpine skiing with four. Alex Ferreira also gave Team USA another gold medal by winning the men’s freestyle skiing halfpipe. Additionally, the mixed free-style aerials team won gold thanks to Kaila Kuhn, Connor Curran, and Chris Lillis.
The final female gold medal winner was Elana Meyes Taylor in the women’s monobob bobsled. In her fifth Olympics, she became the oldest U.S. woman to win an individual winter Olympic medal at 41.
Jordan Stolz won two gold medals for Team USA, one in the 1000-meter speed skate and one in the 500-meter speed skate. With an additional silver medal in the 1500 meter, he was the most decorated American athlete at this year’s games.
