The 2024-2025 math team season was an exciting and competitive journey for this year’s group of talented mathletes. While there were many who supported and engaged with the math team, those who ultimately competed were Zane Chumsae, Finn Convery, Christopher Dimino, Chase Dolan, Rhett Geranis, Brady Holmes, Mark-Anthony Iordanov, and Callin Noonan. This season, the group took on five challenging meets, each featuring a host of different mathematical concepts. Math team members practiced after school on Tuesdays and during Wellness Wednesdays to sharpen their skills and prepare for timed competition. While the team faced many challenges, they ultimately podiumed at every single meet, with three 1st place finishes, one 2nd place finish, and one 3rd place finish.
Starting off the season strong at Marshwood, the team conquered arithmetic with “*” operations, inequalities and absolute value, matrices, number yheory, and geometric similarities. With just five out of six competitors, the team was still able to secure 1st place out of 8 teams! Pushing ahead, the team began preparing for next meet’s challenges.

With a win under their belt, the team was ready to face Traip Academy on their home turf. However, when it came to Counting Principles and Series and Sequences, the team struggled due to time constraints. In order to make up for lost ground, the group pulled it together for the team round and ended up securing a solid third place. While this meet challenged the team, it taught them to stay humble and to always work towards improving in the future.

Returning to their winning ways, the team competed at Biddeford High School in December. With topics like probability, exponents and radicals, complex numbers, and arithmetic with percent, the team felt confident with their prior knowledge of these concepts from Algebra II. While competition was steep, the York team pulled out another 1st place!

After a long Winter Break and most of January to prepare, it was time to face meet #4 at Kennebunk High School. Once again, this meet was heavy with arithmetic, functions, and trigonometry. Additionally, the team’s rivals from Traip and Sanford were eager to challenge York once again. Yet, aside from Traip and Sanford, none of the other teams were able to come close to York’s point total, landing them in 1st!

Regular season concluded at Wells High School this March where the final meet focused on algebraic fractions and factoring, trigonometric equations, circles and spheres, conics, and statistics. It was a general consensus among the team that this meet was by far the hardest—being that conics and circles are not a focus in high school math. Still, the team finished strong in 2nd place behind Sanford!

Ultimately, the York Math Team’s performance this season has been exceptional. In fact, this Math Team is the strongest it has ever been at York. This is largely due to the high level of dedication put in by all team members this season and Coach J’s immense commitment to making sure everyone gets what they need. Their discipline, teamwork, and problem solving skills are admirable. The York Math Team now looks to the States on April 1st. Hoping to finish the year strong, York aims to at least beat the other teams in the Southwest Division while having fun doing it. Regardless of the results, wish the Math Team luck at this upcoming competition!
