As quarter three comes to an end, it’s time to start thinking about next year’s class schedule. If you are a freshman, sophomore, or junior, you should schedule an appointment with your counselor, if you have not already done so. In addition, there are some upcoming changes with our elective system, and two new electives to consider. Ms. Horrisberger provides advice on class selection, “My advice would be to look at what you were recommended for. Talk to your teachers if you have any questions…make sure to look at what electives are available for you, know what requirements you have left, and talk to your family. Make mindful choices and try to pick a mix of classes that will challenge you, and classes you will enjoy.”
Starting next year, there will be some electives only offered every other year. They will be organized by even and odd years, and therefore, certain electives are only offered on even years, and certain electives are only offered on odd years.
Below are the even year exclusive electives which will be offered next year.
English: Broadcast Media, Broadcast Studio, Lyric Writing, English Lab, Literacy Workshop
Fine Arts: AP 3-D Art and Design Portfolio
Science: Computer Aided Design 1 (CP), Computer Aided Design 2. Drones 1 (CP), Unity Game Programming (CP)
Social Studies: History/Sports & Entertainment (CP/HON)
In addition to the system changes, there will be two new electives offered next year: Drones 1 (CP), and Mapping the Future: Disaster and Change (CP).
Drones 1 (CP): “This dynamic, hands-on course is designed to introduce students to the concept of flying and programming drones while pursuing the history and applications of drones. Students will be exposed to drone theory topics including both autonomous and piloted control systems while emphasizing safety as a priority. Students will gain practical experience in coding and controlling drones. The course may include both simulated flight as well as actual drone piloting with challenges provided to expose students to a variety of scenarios where drones can be applied in a 21st century work environment. Students will develop a strong foundation in drone programming, enabling them to create and execute autonomous flight missions.” (YHS Program of Studies 25-26)
Mapping the Future: Disaster and Change (CP):“Semester-based social studies elective course open to sophomore, juniors and seniors. This course provides an opportunity to use the same technology tools used in high-demand careers to examine geographic questions, conduct analysis and explore themes. Students will work with data in ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends. These skills are invaluable to careers in many fields including environmental science, engineering, government work, defense, business, and public safety. This course also provides for a semester-ending capstone project and internship.”(YHS Program of Studies 25-26)
