The York Wildcats have kicked off their winter sports seasons strong. The basketball, hockey, skiing, track and field, and wrestling teams have all had their first games and meets. The Wildcats are now midseason and working towards making the playoffs.
The boy’s basketball team has started off their season well with the leadership of their new coach, Matt Regan. They are undefeated with a record of 12-0. Coach Regan explains that they are “hoping to continue to keep playing well,” especially with the help of standout players, Reece MacDonald, Lukas Bouchard, Ryan Cummins, and Jack Joyce. Reece MacDonald is one of the team’s top scorers, averaging 27 points a game. Lukas Bouchard, who was injured at the beginning of the season, has come back strong, averaging 12 points and 10 rebounds a game, and is also a good defender for the team. Ryan Cummins and Jack Joyce have helped the team win through their ball-handling skills, and are also some of the team’s top defenders. The team had a tough match-up against Kennebunk on Saturday, January 11, 2025, but pulled out a victory. On the resilience of the team, Coach Regan explains, “I think we have a lot of depth that comes off the bench and are always ready to play.”
The girl’s basketball team has a record of 6-6 to start the season. Ava Fontaine, a captain on the team explains that the team is strong and resilient and is working to improve their game throughout the year. Their goals for the season are to make it to the playoffs and continue to build more team chemistry. Their next game is on Jan 14, 2025, against Marshwood.
The Nordic skiing team is looking strong this year with a larger group of people from a collection of different schools. They had their first meet of the season on Wednesday, Jan 8, 2025, and a junior on the team Madelyn Herman states that “the meet went well for everyone.” The team’s next meet is on Wednesday, Jan 15, 2025.
The Alpine Skiing team’s season has started out slow because of the lack of snow. Their first few meets were canceled, however, they have a meet on Tuesday, Jan 14, 2025 against Yarmouth, Lake Region, and GNG. A member of the team, Cooper Dodge, explains that they’ve, “been on snow a couple times” and are ready for their first meet of the season.
The wrestling team has started out the season with a record of 3-8, however, the wrestling head coach, Bryan Thompson says, “Our record really doesn’t reflect where we are [..], but we have a lot of kids that are competing for weight classes, and a lot of kids that are around the same weights, so in another year or two, when they start to mature and grow a little bit better, it will reflect on our record.” The wrestling team’s next meet is on Saturday, Jan 11, 2025, at the Kennebunk Duals. The team is also hosting 18 teams for the Hammerhead Duals, on January 18, 2025. The team’s goal for the end of the year is to get as many people to the state meet as possible. The state meet qualifier is on February 8, 2025, at the Maine Class B South Regional in Fryeburg.
The boys and girls indoor track teams started out their season with a meet at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham (USM) against Cape Elizabeth, GNG, Freeport, Traip, Mount Valley, Booth Bay, Wiscasset, Yarmouth, and Isleboro. The boys team won the meet with a total of 168 points, and the girls placed third with a total of 88.5 points. Both teams also competed at the USM New Year’s Invitational meet this past weekend. The head coach of winter track explains his goals for this season, “I just want everyone to be physically healthy, and have their best events possible.”
The girl’s hockey team started out their season with a record of 2-12. They won their last game against Greely/Gray-New Gloucester 3-1, and are looking for a win against Portland/Cape Elizabeth/Deering/South Portland/Waynflete on Jan 16, 2025.
The boy’s hockey team has a record of 7-3 so far this season. They had a huge 7-0 win over Brunswick/Freeport on Jan 4, 2025. Their next game is against Cheverus/Yarmouth on Jan 18, 2025.
All of the winter sports teams have been working hard towards playoffs and team goals this season. There is definitely hope for York to bring home some State Championships this season!
