After being inducted last spring, it was time for the new members of the National Honors Society to get to work! Earlier this fall, the society went through the routine tasks such as naming new officers. For the 2024-2025 school year, the president is Chloe Whitbread, the vice president is Peter Martin, the treasurer is Maren Robinson, and the secretary is Hannah Cleary. After their elections, these officers got right to organizing the groups’ first service project.
Starting in late September, there were extensive discussions during the weekly morning meetings about what project would best serve the community. Members brought up good points about making sure the project wasn’t too similar to others of various clubs around the school and whether it should be expanded to all the schools in the district. After many meetings, the group decided on doing a food drive near the Thanksgiving holiday. This food drive took place the week leading up to Thanksgiving break, with boxes in the front office and auditorium lobby of the high school as well as at the office of Village Elementary school. In addition to promoting the drive the week before, the group decided that adding a competition aspect to the food drive would bring about more donations. For the Monday of vacation week, the pride that brought in the most donations would win a pizza party. There has yet to be a formal announcement for the winning pride but it was a very close competition!
Overall, the National Honors Society gathered a large sum of food and supplies to make a sizable donation to both the Kittery and York food pantries. In addition to donating the foods raised, the National Honors Society will be using some of their money, already raised, to buy more goods to donate to the pantries. This will provide these communities with more food leading into the coldern and holiday filled months. Thank you to all those that donated and thank you to the National Honors Society for organizing such a successful event. The community can not wait for your future service projects!
