The YHS Eco Club has been hard at work during weekly Thursday meetings discussing ways to improve the sustainability of York High School. For example, after evaluating the success of their prior pride trash clean up, they are considering an additional clean up this Spring. In addition to this, the club has recirculated the idea of implementing composting within the school. If this is a topic of interest to you, come to the next meeting this Thursday after school. The YHS Eco Club is welcome to all!
Pride Trash Clean Up:
In the Spring of 2023, Eco Club organized a very successful trash clean up during pride to promote routine maintenance of the York campus. During this clean up, prides competed to pick up the most trash, with some prides picking up items as large as
chairs, couches, and benches. Many prides participated in this clean up, working hard at gathering trash and improving cleanliness. In fact, there was virtually no trash on school grounds for a time. Considering the success of this event, Eco Club is hoping to hold another, in the Spring of 2025, pending good weather conditions.
Composting:
Composting has been a matter of concern for the Eco Club for some time now. Currently the club is in the process of kick-starting this project in the hopes of being able to compost our food waste. The club was given a grant a couple years back, and the club plans to put the money towards Mr. Fox composting for the school. Of course, there are many logistics to work through during upcoming meetings. Once again, if you wish to join in, visit the Eco Club this Thursday after school to voice your opinion and expedite the project.
If either of these topics are of interest to you, or if you’d like to contribute to conversations regarding the sustainability of York High School, the club is apt to accept you. All are welcome to attend, and ideas are appreciated. The YHS Eco Club wishes you well and encourages you to try and make a difference in the school, at home, and in the community.
