Throughout the holiday season, there are numerous performances involving YHS students to look out for. These performances display the hard work and creativity that YHS students have put in all year. In particular, there are two significant events happening in the York Community Auditorium: the choral concerts and the YHS drama performance of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol.
First, there are three choral concerts happening before the holiday break. On Monday, December 9, and Monday, December 16, there are full program concerts conducted by Rob Westerberg, including portions from the chorus, treble choir, chamber singers, and one piece involving all three groups combined. To begin the concert, the Chamber Singers and the Treble Choir will perform their annual “Silent Night” procession through the auditorium. Next, the Treble Choir will have their portion of the concert, including four songs, such as “Carol of the Bells” and “A Joyful Song.” After the treble choir, the chorus will take the stage and sing their two songs, “See Amid the Winter’s Snow” among them. The chamber singers are performing a selection of four songs, including “Lully Lulla,” “Very Best Time of the Year,” and their annual performance of “Hallelujah Christ is Born” with Chamber Singer alumni. To finish the concerts, the full choral program of all three groups will perform the piece “He Is Born.” In addition to the York High School choral concert on December, 17, the York High School Chamber Singers will be performing alongside the South Berwick Community Chorus and the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra for their Family Holiday Pops Concert. At this concert, the orchestra and the community chorus will each perform a selection of songs individually. As well as this, the chamber singers will sing “Lully Lulla,” “Sing We Now of Christmas,” and “The Very Best Time of the Year.” These three concerts, on December 9, 16, and 17, show the work that the three choirs in the high school have been putting in for the last few months. Not only are students from YHS putting on three spectacular choral concerts, but they will also be putting on a play for the Christmas season.
The York High School Drama Club combines with the Middle and Elementary Schools to perform their annual version of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol on December 6, 7 and 8. Directed by George Hosker-Bouley, this play has been a York Community favorite for years. It includes singing, dancing, and theatrical acting to convey a sense of holiday cheer. It follows the character Ebenezer Scrooge through his night-long journey with the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future to better himself as a person during Christmas. This year, Scrooge will be played by Carter Short, the ghost of Christmas Past will be played by Blake Wilson, the Ghost of Christmas Present will be played by Brooklynne O’Neil. Additionally, the production will be co-narrated by Sophie Scapicchio and Chloe Whitbread.
