This year’s fall production is Treading Water, The Smuttynose Murders! It was written and directed by George Hosker-Bouley, YHS’s shows director. It is showing on October 31st, and November 1st-2nd at 7:00pm in the York Community Auditorium.
Treading Water, The Smuttynose Murders is a true story that goes back to 1837 in a small fishing village on Smuttynose Island, in the Isles of the Shoals, which is heavily populated by Norwegian immigrants and fishermen with their families. It tells the tale of two women who got murdered. One day a man by the name of Louis Wagner (played Carter Short), came to the island looking for work and to improve his life. Louis is often disheveled and sickly, and doesn’t always feel great. He is taken in by a fisherman and his wife. He begins to work on the fishing boats and on the island docks. The family he stays with is made up of John (played by Charlie Nichols), a fishing boat captain and John’s wife Maren (played by Maxine Adelson). One day things start to change when Louis falls in love with Anethe (played by Blake Wilson), a local married woman. You get to learn more about the characters, their life plans, their motives, and true intentions as the show continues! Exiting musical numbers are included and the show is narrated in rap!
Senior Sophie Scapicchio, who plays Karen, says “I’m very excited about it, and it’s going to be a great production. The cast is
working really well together, and the set is really bold.” Another senior, Carter Short, is the main character (Louis Wagner), and tells how he feels about it, “The show is coming together extremely well. Despite so many new actors, which tends to pose a challenge in the fall, we have quickly become a family. We are all working extremely hard to put together a show that will certainly be one for the ages. Each actor brings their own unique flare and personality to the stage.” Narrator/Boge, Senior Callan Eves, explains, “Theater is cooperative. It is not to see who is better, but the goal is to work together and create something better.” Stage manager, another senior Kailee Earley, thinks: “It is a welcoming experience.”
The show is going to be an exciting show filled with drama, action, love, murder and much more!
