As the regular season is winding down, the postseason for the Wildcats is about to kick off. The York Wildcats look to hold their own against tough competition as well as compete for the state title in many sports.
Starting off, we have the girl’s volleyball team. The volleyball team has a 11-2 record and they are only behind Washington Academy who has a 13-0 record leading into the tournament. The volleyball team is led by captains Brooke Roe and Bella Parrotta. Another crucial player for this top team is senior Hannah Cleary and this is what she had to say about the playoffs. “I think as a team we have a shot. We’re a confident team who knows our skills and what we’re capable of. There’s definitely going to be some tough competition we have to face going through playoffs, but we know what we need to work on and how we can be the most successful team and work together.” The whole town knows how good York volleyball is, now it’s time for the whole state to know.
The field hockey team’s season is coming to a close, with one game left in their schedule they are the four seed in the playoffs with a 7-6 record. Their last game is away at Cape Elizabeth. The team is only behind Freeport, Yarmouth and GNG/NYA. York had really great and close games against each of the teams. Top scorers, like Bella Santini, key defensive players, such as Lindsay Rivers, and sophomore goalie Sarah Orso will need to bring their all as they will for sure face tough competition as they battle their way through the postseason.
The boys soccer team is doing great with a 7-6 record and they had great wins against Wells and Waynflete beating them by 6 each game. With that 7-6 record and 1 games left against GNG they look to be sitting nice in the middle of the pack, at the 6th seed. Last week, Zack Trembely explained the importance of their game on October 19, 2024, “We have a huge game coming up against Yarmouth which if we win wou;d give us a home playoff game. If we wanna win we have to have a great team effort throughout and energy from all players to give us that push.” Even though the Wildcats fell short in this game, Captain Quinn Walenta told us more about the final push of the season into the playoffs “I think our team is really turning the corner at this point in the season. We’re starting to click and figure things out, putting us in a good spot heading into the playoffs. I believe that we can make a deep run this year, and potentially a shot at states.” We also have a quote from Coach Johnson about their playoff run, “I think something that is benefiting our team is that we are just starting to gel, it’s taken a little bit of time. We had a successful season, but I feel like at the beginning of the year we weren’t up to our expectations just yet, and it feels like we are starting to gel at the perfect time. We have been building all season and we are ready, I think , for the playoffs, and to make a run.” They do have a shot to make it deep as they have put up a fight with every team, even those that they suffered a loss to in the regular season. Hopefully we will get to see our Wildcats at home for the playoffs and give them a loud Catpack student section.
The golf team just finished their states push with sadly coming in just short in 5th, but before states they had qualifiers. In those qualifiers they had the best score among all the western conference teams. Even more before that, they had their regular season in which they won most meets, other than struggling at Purpoodock Country Club. This is what captain TJ Reagan had to say about their states run, “We played our hearts out, yet we fell short and placed 5th at the state tournament. I’ve never been more proud of a team I’ve been on, and our future is very bright for York golf, go York!” Nice job golf team, come back next year and bring it home for York!
The girls soccer team has had a tough year going, 3-9-1, but this was a rebuilding year for the Wildcats as they graduated a class of key players in 2024. Chloe DeLuca, senior captain, discusses more about this young team, “We have worked so hard to get where we are and so many young teammates have had to step up and fulfill very important roles in our team. We have definitely proved that we are a strong team and I am so proud and happy to be a part of this team!” The team has one more game at GNG this Tuesday. Go Wildcats!
Last but not least the York football team. They have gone 2-4 with 1 game left. A couple weeks ago they picked up a homecoming win against Cape Elizabeth. Hopefully they will continue the momentum into the playoffs. The York football team is led by captains JJ Luchette, Peter Martin, Kai Nelson and Michael Hanlon. With star players like James Nichols and Michael Hanlon injured, how will they do? Well this is what quarterback, Peter Martin had to say about it “It’s not about a single player, it’s about a team as a whole. So even though we have players who are hurt, like Mikey, Nick and James out. It’s tough, but you have to just push through and we have people that can fill in, and people that can step up like JJ Luchette who is an important part of our game. I like Jake Fletcher will have a game, and step up and play a new position, also Freshman Brady Rancatti-Bragg will have to step up and take James Nichols spot on the line.” The football team has had very close games against Brunswick, Fryeburg and Oceanside, only losing by 1-2 scores in both games. The Football team has really shown they could compete with and hopefully keep competing through playoffs.
York’s star offensive tackle and defensive end, senior and captain, Kai Nelson had a couple words to say about the playoff run “I’m expecting for us to go out there and play our hardest, we don’t have the numbers right now, but we have to make that up with effort, focus, and the hard work to get there.. I can’t say for sure, but it’s gonna be a battle, and I have faith in my boys.”
In conclusion, there is hope that York can bring home a state championship for all sports, from volleyball to football to field hockey. GO YORK!!!
