The York High School Drama Club performed The Legend of Sleepy Hollow this fall. This tale takes place in the countryside around a Dutch American settlement in the late 1600’s. The town of Sleepy Hollow is known for its ghosts and eerie atmosphere. It is rumored the town is bewitched, and the most famous spector is the headless horseman.
The story revolves around school teacher Ichabod Crane and his competition with Brom Bones, a local prankster, for the hand of Katrina Van Tassel. The tale has had many versions over history. Originating from the short story by Washington Irving in 1820, it has seen many adaptations. From Disney in 1949, to a 1999 movie directed by Tim Burton, to York High School’s own take on the legendary tale. The York High school adaptation of the tale had unique elements, Director and choreographer, George Hosker-Bouley describes, “I am always looking to do something we have not done before. We will add heavy metal music to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, alongside some topical references.”
The production was put on the weekend before Halloween, the spooky feel of the show aligns with the holiday. George Hosker-Bouley explains his hopes for the show, “It is my hope that we present this as a human story. A story about a community who all knew each other’s secrets and who all believed that one day their life could end at the hands of the Headless Horseman.” John Hopkins, YHS senior, playing the lead Ichabod Crane, illustrates his enthusiasm, “I’m definitely most excited about this being my first ever time in the lead role – a year ago I would’ve been terrified to have so many lines and such a big part but I couldn’t be more thrilled now!” The growth of the drama club has led to many new faces and talent being showcased in the High School productions.
In addition to this performance, the Drama club has endured some changes from previous years. The drama club now is led by President: Malia Dustin, Vice-President: John Hopkins, and Secretary: Maxine Adelson. This change in leadership is hoped to build more student lead efforts within the club and provide more opportunities.
